Charlie

Luxton

Charlie Luxton is an architectural designer who combines his design work with writing and presenting television programmes. He is passionate about the environment and communicating his enthusiasm for sustainable architecture and eco-friendly design.

Charlie studied at Oxford Brookes University for a BA in Architecture achieving a first class honours degree, before going on to complete an MA at the Royal College of Art in London.

He worked for a number of architecture practices and then in 2000 became a founding director of Free State, the design and communications company that uses the built environment to create awareness far beyond the reach of traditional media. Recent projects include Zoomorphic, an exhibition for the V&A and Electric Storm, a 3 month renewable energy event on the South Bank in London. In 2005 he left London and Free State to focus on sustainable housing. As Charlie Luxton Environmental Design he is currently working on several sustainable housing projects in London, Wiltshire, and the Cotswolds where he now lives.

Charlie began his broadcasting career in 2000, presenting a six part series, Modern British Architects, for Channel 5.  He followed this with two three part series for Channel 4: Not All Houses are Square and Not All Bricks and Mortar.

Charlie then moved to the BBC fronting numerous series across all their channels, including the prime time BBC2 series, Restored To Glory, for which he also co-wrote the accompanying book.

In 2006 Charlie took his first leap across the Atlantic and presented two series for US networks.  Artland USA saw Charlie driving across the country looking at influential architecture, while Vertical City enabled him to look at the world’s most famous skyscrapers from the top down, whilst hanging from a window washer’s cradle.  He filmed the second series of this in 2007.

Back in the UK, following a spell at ITV hosting Homes and Property, Charlie became the face of Architeture and Design on Five.  During his two years at the Channel from 2008 he presented the first series of I Own Britain’s Best House and was later given access to landmark buildings, including the Bank of England, for Behind Closed Doors.  He also fronted two series of Build A New Life In The Country.

One of Charlie’s most recent projects, and perhaps his most ambitious, was to front the Sky One series, The Great Treehouse Challenge, building spectacular treehouses for local communities and charities.

Charlie is now back on the BBC, appearing as the regular guest designer and sustainability expert on DIY SOS: The Big Build and filming reports for Britain’s Hidden Heritage on BBC1.  This year he will be fronting a series of films for the Culture Show and in Spring 2012 will be presenting Rebuilding The Past on BBC2.
